Writing
Quarter One
Writing is done in two lines in journals. Stories are mainly pictorial with one to two sentences explaining their picture. With reminding students use capital letters and punctuation. Students will do a “report” for International Day.

Quarter Two
Writing is done in two lines in journals. Students respond to prompts with two to four sentences. With reminding students use capital letters and punctuation. We will write “how to”s, recipes, and informational pieces. We will learn about nouns and verbs. We will be writing narratives with our work becoming less dependent upon the pictorial or oral for understanding.

Quarter Three
Writing is done in a single line in journals. While continuing to grow in personal narrative and responsive writing, we will also begin to write simple poems. Our writing stamina should be up to 20 minutes of focused writing and producing 1-2 page stories. We will be learning about adjectives and using them in our writing.

Quarter Four
Writing is done in a single line in journals. We’re going to be taking off now! Students will be writing multiple page stories, taking “notes” and writing a review, and doing an author study. Spelling should be phonetical when an unknown word is used. Students will end the year with a final writing project on a country of their choice.

Reading/Phonics
This year our reading will change so much. We will go from sounding out words to fluently reading double vowel and special sound words. We will learn 166 special sounds and work on using them to improve decoding skills. We will also be memorizing Fry’s 100-200 sight words throughout the year to help us read with speed. We are looking for fluency, expression and understanding while reading. Children grow at their own rate in reading, the key is to just keep reading, reading and more reading! :)

Quarter 1
Identifying short and long vowel sounds and marking appropriately. Students will review blends and learn new special sounds. Students will find special sounds in words to aid in decoding. Students work with rhyming words.
Students learn how reading groups are run. They will master short vowel works and work with double vowel words. We will work on being word detectives as we gain confidence in reading.

Quarter 2
Syllable work is introduced along with identifying the vowel each syllable. Students will use syllables for help in sounding out the spelling of words. More special sounds are learned and speed in identifying special sounds is quickened.
Students work on stamina in reading (the length of focused time). Students will all be reading double vowel words and sing vowel words.

Quarter 3
Students will learn all of our special sounds this quarter. We will work on decoding words using special sounds, reciting special sound key words ad thinking of words containing a specific sound or pattern.
Reading lessons continue to increase fluency and stamina. Students also work with different types of materials. We will be critically thinking about what we read.

Quarter 4
Students will continue to work on special sounds to create better readers and spellers. We will be able to spell, identify and give words for each of our 166 special sounds. Students should be able to identify and define suffix, prefix, plural, verb, noun, and adjective.

Ipads

Semester One:
Students will work on being able to find letters on the keyboard. This will be done in partnership with homework and through time at school.

Semester two:

Students will be playing learning games on the ipads with increasing independence.
